Spiritual growth is not a matter of ticking boxes, trying harder, or simply knowing more. At its core, it is about becoming like Jesus through intentional practices, community, and the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. The message of Jesus is not one of striving but of being transformed by His grace, His truth, and His presence in our lives.
In Christian life, we often hear phrases like “becoming like Jesus.” But what does that mean? The process, sometimes called spiritual formation, invites us into a deeper journey of alignment between our beliefs and actions. It begins with “being with Jesus,” progresses into “becoming like Jesus,” and culminates in “doing as Jesus did.”
This transformation is not about earning God’s approval. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus already loves us, died for us, and has redeemed us. Instead, the process is about living in the freedom and abundance He offers. As followers of Jesus, we are invited into a lifelong partnership with God to become the people He created us to be.
The Journey of Transformation
Spiritual formation is not exclusive to Christians—it is a human experience. We are constantly being shaped by our environment, relationships, and habits. The question is not whether we are changing but who we are becoming. Christianity offers a unique invitation to be shaped into people of love in Christ. This transformation isn’t quick or easy, but it is meaningful, joyful, and deeply fulfilling.
In this journey, we can resist common pitfalls like trying harder, knowing more, or doing more. These approaches often leave us exhausted and frustrated. Instead, we can embrace four key principles:
- Fill Yourself with Truth: Transformation begins by meditating on God’s truth. As Tozer said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” Knowing God’s character and immersing ourselves in Scripture reorients our lives around His reality.
- Practise the Way of Jesus: Spiritual formation is not about adding more to our to-do lists but adopting habits that reflect Jesus’ unforced rhythms of grace. This includes practices like prayer, rest, and intentional community.
- Engage in Community: Transformation happens best in relationships. We are called to encourage one another, offer accountability, and share the journey of faith together. Jesus’ commands are designed for community, not isolation.
- Rely on the Holy Spirit: Ultimately, transformation is a work of the Holy Spirit. While we participate in the process, the power to change comes from God. He is the one who sanctifies us, often working through life’s challenges to refine our hearts.
A Lifelong Journey
Becoming like Jesus is not about quick fixes or shortcuts. It is a gradual, sometimes messy process that unfolds over time. Whether in seasons of joy or suffering, God is faithful to complete the good work He began in us (Philippians 1:6). Our role is to keep following Jesus, trusting in His grace, and embracing the journey.
As we align our lives with Jesus, we discover a life of peace, purpose, and joy that the world cannot offer. This is the abundant life Jesus promised, and it is available to everyone who chooses to follow Him.
